Puerto de la Cruz, on Tenerife's north coast, blends Spanish colonial architecture, tropical gardens and black volcanic sand beaches. An authentic destination, far from the bustle of the island's south.

Puerto de la Cruz is the main beach resort on Tenerife's northern coast. Nestled at the foot of Teide and facing the Atlantic, it combines Spanish colonial architecture, tropical botanical gardens and black volcanic sand beaches. Less touristy than the island's south, it retains genuine local life, historic alleyways and cuisine rooted in Canarian tradition.

Quick Facts

  • Access: approximately 35 km from Tenerife North airport (TFN); TITSA bus lines 101/102 from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
  • Recommended stay: 2 to 3 days to explore the town and surroundings.
  • Dress code: casual; cover shoulders when visiting churches.
  • Wheelchair accessibility: the waterfront (Paseo San Telmo) is accessible; the historic centre has uneven cobblestones.

What to See

The historic heart revolves around the Plaza del Charco, a shaded square lined with Indian laurels where locals and visitors converge. The Lago Martiánez, a seawater pool complex designed by César Manrique, runs along the waterfront. The Botanical Garden (Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava), founded in 1788, houses an exceptional collection of tropical and subtropical plants.

History and Context

Puerto de la Cruz was Tenerife's first commercial port, the departure point for Malmsey wine exports to Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its decline as a port in the 19th century was offset by the rise of thermal and climate tourism, attracting British and Nordic clientele from the late 19th century onwards. This dual history—Atlantic trade and seaside retreat—explains the blended architecture of the centre.

Highlights of Your Visit

Plaza del Charco

The social heart of the town, this paved square is lined with cafés and houses featuring carved wooden balconies typical of Canarian architecture. In the evening, it comes alive with local activity that the major southern resorts have lost.

Lago Martiánez

Designed by Lanzarote artist César Manrique, this seawater pool complex is as much a work of art as a bathing destination. The black and white pools contrast beautifully with the Atlantic blue in the background.

Botanical Garden (Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava)

One of Spain's oldest botanical gardens. Its giant banyan tree, whose aerial roots form a forest in themselves, is the garden's emblematic image. The collection of palms, tree ferns and orchids is remarkable.

Playa Jardín

Black volcanic sand beach developed by César Manrique, framed by lush gardens. Entry is free; Atlantic waves make it a favourite spot for beginner surfers.

San Francisco Church and Old Harbour

The La Ranilla quarter, around the old fishing port, preserves 17th-century colonial houses with dark wooden balconies. The San Francisco church, austere and whitewashed, dates from the 17th century.

Etiquette and Visiting Rules

  • In churches (San Francisco, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia): cover shoulders and knees, remain quiet during services.
  • At the Botanical Garden: do not pick plants or leave marked pathways.
  • On beaches: nudism is not permitted on municipal managed beaches.

Photography Tips

Golden morning light is ideal on Plaza del Charco before crowds arrive. For Lago Martiánez, come late afternoon: the western sunset illuminates the pools and Teide in the background. At the Botanical Garden, filtered light under the canopy is best between 9 and 11 am. The La Ranilla alleyways offer striking architectural framing with minimal crowds early in the morning.
