The history of the port city of Santa Cruz

Before the arrival of the Castilian conquerors, the city of Santa Cruz was once a wild land surrounded by lush forest, belonging to the Menceyato (Guanche kingdom) of Anaga. The city was founded by Alonso Fernández de Lugo in 1494. During the 15th century, with its large port spanning 150 square kilometres, the city became a resupply point for ships heading to America, Africa and Europe.

Capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz ranks second among the most populated cities in the Canaries. Like Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, it is also known as one of its two capitals.

This port city is located in the north-east of Tenerife and is added to the list of municipalities in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, it stands between Tenerife Bay and the Anaga massif. Santa Cruz's economy rests primarily on tourism, though the industrial sector is also thriving.
