The Canaries archipelago is an excellent destination for practicing or learning kitesurfing. The islands of Fuerteventura and Tenerife are the most renowned among kite enthusiasts, but there are also several spots on Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Discover where to kitesur in the Canaries!

The Best Kitesurfing Spots in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is renowned for hosting some of the best kitesurfing spots in the Canaries. You'll find both beginner-friendly spots for learning and advanced spots reserved for experienced kitesurfers. Here are the main ones:

  •  Sotavento: located at the far southeast, this is one of the most renowned kitesurfing spots on the island. It even hosts international kitesurfing and windsurfing competitions. That's how optimal the wind conditions are here. The good news? The Sotavento lagoon is accessible to all levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced!

  • Flag Beach: situated in the north of Fuerteventura facing Lobos Island, this magnificent white sand beach with turquoise waters is perfect for riding. The entry is easy and beginners are welcome, but watch out for reefs!

  • El Cotillo: head to the northwest of the island and the El Cotillo beach to practice kitesurfing on this bay stretching over 1 km long. Note that this spot is better suited for experienced kitesurfers.

  • El Burro Beach: located in the Corralejo sand dunes natural park in the northeast of the island, this spot features a zone designed for beginners with short and relatively gentle waves. As for more experienced kitesurfers, they'll also find plenty to enjoy.

  • Matas Blancas: this beach in the south of the island allows you to kitesur in the open sea. The weak wave force makes it a spot suitable for all kitesurfing levels.

  • Cofete: attention all lovers of off-the-beaten-path sites, we recommend heading to Cofete for kitesurfing. This spot, considered one of the most isolated on the island, features beautiful waves due to a confluence of currents where the northern and southern seas meet.

The Best Kitesurfing Spots in Tenerife

Tenerife also ranks as one of the best Canaries islands for learning and practicing kitesurfing. And everything centers around the El Medano beach. This beach located in the southeast of the island, near Tenerife South airport, benefits from ideal wind conditions for riding the waves with the famous Montaña Roja as your backdrop.

While El Medano beach is accessible to beginners, the El Cabezo beach, located just north of El Medano, is reserved for more experienced kitesurfers. The entries and exits are tricky and the waves are powerful. It's an excellent kitesurfing spot for jumping. Perfect for the most daring riders!

The Best Kitesurfing Spots in Lanzarote

The best kitesurfing spots in the Canaries

Lanzarote has several kitesurfing spots, but overall they are more technical and therefore reserved for experienced kitesurfers. The best-known spot is Famara Beach. This large 6km beach offers superb wind conditions and waves breaking along the bay almost year-round. While Famara is accessible to all levels, other kitesurfing spots are also available on Lanzarote but require solid foundational skills. We're thinking in particular of the spots at Costa Teguise, Playa Honda, Arrieta Beach, Matagorda Beach, and Jameos.

The Best Kitesurfing Spots in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the windiest island in the Canaries. Needless to say, you'll find excellent kitesurfing spots here. Except the sometimes challenging conditions make it a favored destination for experienced kitesurfers. Among the most popular kitesurfing spots in Gran Canaria, we can mention Jinamar Beach, located in the northeast of the island and renowned for its breaking waves and regular winds. We also think of Salinas de Pozo on the southeast coast of Gran Canaria with its famous long waves, as well as Vargas in the east of the island with its constant winds.

When to Kitesur in the Canaries?

The Canaries are ideal destinations for kitesurfing enthusiasts because sailing conditions are ideal virtually year-round. Plus, outdoor temperatures and water temperatures are pleasant both summer and winter. The best time to kitesur in the Canaries is still May to September, when the trade winds offer particularly favorable constant winds.
